Emergency sirens blared across Brisbane today as deadly floodwaters that have cut a swath across northeast Australia shut down the centre of the nation's third-largest city, sending thousands fleeing from their homes.

Unconfirmed reports say that at least 22 people have so far died in Australia's north-eastern state of Queensland and a further 67 remain missing from tsunami-like flash floods that tore through townships west of the city this week.

Almost 20,000 homes in Brisbane were expected to be swamped in the city of about two million by the time the Brisbane River reaches its expected peak tomorrow, Mayor Campbell Newman said.

Residents today pushed food-laden shopping carts through drowned streets, others waded in shoulder-high water to rescue possessions, while boats and pontoons were ripped from moorings in the Brisbane River and smashed into bridges as the muddy brown tide gathered strength.

At flooded intersections people paddled surfboards through floodwaters, balancing their possessions on the deck of the boards, while boats ferried evacuees to dry ground.

The surging, muddy waters reached the tops of traffic lights in some parts of the city.

Downtown Brisbane was empty, with the normally bustling office buildings deserted and the central business district transformed into a watery ghost town.

Most roads around the city were closed, and people moved about in kayaks and rowboats.

One of the city's sports stadiums, which hosts international rugby games, was flooded with muddy, chest-deep water.

'I am feeling a sense of horror and awe at the power of the river. Sadly in coming hours we will see bits of people's homes float down the river,' Brisbane Mayor Campbell Newman said, warning the torrent could take three to four days to subside.

Rescue crews took advantage of some rare sunshine to look for the dozens still missing, feared dead in the flood waters.

'We can take no comfort from that blue sky,' Queensland state Premier Anna Bligh told reporters.

'The water and the rain have already done their damage. This is a deeply serious natural disaster.'

Vast damage has been done to Ipswich, a satellite town to the west of Brisbane, which is home to 15,000 people.

'The water is rising and swallowing up the city. It's really heartbreaking,' said Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale.

Video from the scene showed horses swimming through the brown waters, pausing to rest their heads on the roof of a house - the only dry spot they could reach.

The trouble started after drenching rains in Australia's north-eastern state of Queensland that began in November sent swollen rivers spilling over their banks, inundating an area larger than France and Germany combined.

The crisis escalated when a violent storm sent a 26-foot, fast-moving torrent - described as an 'inland instant tsunami' - down the Lockyer Valley, crashing through the city of Toowoomba and smaller towns to the west of Brisbane on Monday.

Houses were washed from their foundations and cars tossed about like bath toys.

Hundreds had to be rescued by helicopter yesterday and emergency vehicles were moving into the worst-hit parts of the valley today.

Bligh has warned that the death toll is likely to rise as rescue officials gain access to the devastated areas.

Some 200,000 people have already been affected by the disaster, which has caused billions of pounds of damage and is already worse than the floods that hit Brisbane in 1974, killing 14.

The biggest floods in a century have crippled the coking coal industry in the mining state, destroying infrastructure, putting a brake on the economy and sending the local currency to four-week lows.

The overall economic impact will be devastating, with one central bank board member saying today that the disaster could cut 1 per cent off growth - equal to almost $13 billion, double the previous highest estimate.

The Australian dollar sank to a fresh four-week low of $0.9803 on the comments from Warwick McKibbin, an academic and a member of the central bank's policy-making board.

Treasurer Wayne Swan in November forecast GDP growth of 3.25 per cent in fiscal 2010-11, up from a 3.0 per cent projection, but said spending would be cut to ensure a surplus of A$3.1 billion or 0.2 per cent of GDP in 2012/13.

Food prices are surging around the country as the floods ruin Queensland crops and distribution networks. Prices for tomatoes have leapt about 200 per cent in two weeks, while beef is up 11 per cent and wheat has risen 4 per cent in four months.

Some of the scenes today in Brisbane were surreal, with early-morning joggers trying to carry on as normal, even though parts of their routes were underwater. Others were distraught.

'This is my whole life, everything is gone. I never thought it would get this bad,' said Kim Hung, manager of the Salt 'n' Pepper catering business, as two friends floated a coffee machine toward higher ground.

Raw sewage began spilling into the river and creeks, prompting authorities to warn of a heightened disease risk as damaged water treatment works polluted the floodwaters.

It has been estimated that up to 45,000 people will be affected by the floods. The military is running relief flights with helicopters and C-130 transports.

Dams built to protect Brisbane and outlying towns were spilling floodwaters into swollen rivers. The Port of Brisbane was closed, shutting down Australia's third-busiest container port and a 5-million-tonnes-a-year coal-loading facility.

Australia is the world's biggest exporter of coking coal, which is used in steel manufacturing and accounts for more than half of global exports, and is also the second-biggest exporter of thermal coal used for power generation.

Power company Energex shut power to some low-lying areas of Brisbane, including parts of the financial district, for fear that live power lines could electrify floodwaters. Some 78,000 homes in the southeast of Queensland were without electricity.

If you happened to look up into the sky last night you may have been treated to a dazzling starlight display.

Thanks to the cold weather we have been experiencing over the last month the skies are at their clearest because of clean air pushed down from the arctic.

Anyone wanting to witness the drama of our Milky Way galaxy has probably got one evening left to get away from light pollution to enjoy the spectacle.

Rebecca Sherwin, a forecaster for the Met Office, said: 'Air in the arctic is typically very clear so it's quite normal that you get this quality of air.

'It will probably last until some time this evening - the first part of the night should be okay. The best place to see it is to the east of England.

'These clear skies aren't that infrequent, it's not an uncommon situation to have a cold front coming down from the north with clear skies moving behind.'

She added that the best time to see the stars will be earlier in the evening with a mostly cloudless sky but a warmer front is moving up from the south and that could affect the view.

Exmoor National Park is home to some of the darkest skies inthe country with very little light pollution and is hoping to become the UK's first dark sky national park.

Amateur star gazers were in for a treat at the park's 'discovery event' which was held this weekend.

Astronomer, Sir Patrick Moore, said the main constellations to look out for are Orion, Taurus, Gemini, Canis major and minor, and Auriga as well as the usual suspects that are visible all year round such as the Great Bear.

He also said that a good starting point is the star Sirius which will be incredibly bright and appear to flash different clours

Hayabusa’s Fiery Return

Like a sparkling firework, much of the Japanese space probe Hayabusa disintegrates as it reenters Earth’s atmosphere on June 13. Hidden in the shower of sparks was a heat-shielded, 16-inch (40-centimeter) capsule later found to contain precious scrapings from an asteroid, which could help us understand how our planet and solar system formed.

Hayabusa is among the few spacecraft to return rock samples from space. The driver of this lorry had a miraculous escape after his vehicle was left suspended over a 200ft drop... by a single punctured tyre.

The man lost control of his vehicle along a major road, clipped the concrete wall of a bridge and the heavy lorry rolled over as it slid perilously close to the edge.

A passerby caught the moment on camera as the momentum of the lorry carried it into the barrier and flipped it over the top.

But thanks to the punctured tyre and pieces of torn sheet metal on the ground near the diesel tank, the lorry was somehow pinned in place suspended upside down over the deep gorge below.

Rescuers tentatively approached the vehicle and managed to pull the driver to safety, despite the fact the tyre could have given way at any time.

The barriers on the bridge are clearly too low to be an effective safety measure for lorries and it is unknown if the vehicle was recovered, or allowed to fall into the gorge.

The pictures, which circulated over a year ago on the internet, have just emerged within China which has strict bans on internet use.

Last year, another lorry driver had a lucky escape when the container on his vehicle hit the underside of a bridge and catapulted the cab nose first into the bridge in Changchun city.

How to Make a Amazing Planet Terror Style Poster tips in Photoshop

Step 1

Create a new document in photoshop. For the sake of this tutorial, I will be using an 8×10 inch file at 72dpi. Feel free to adjust this to your liking.
Step 2

The first thing I want to do is find an image for the main portion of the poster and start editing it. I am using the following image:

Student Witch – 5 by *mjranum-stock – Be sure to read his terms on using his images.
Step 3

Re-size the image so that there will be room for the header and footer text.
Step 4

In this step we are going to do several things so that the image has the overall look we need for the poster.

First we will adjust the images levels. Image>Adjustments>Levels

Now we are going to add a slight surface blur to help achieve the vintage print feel. This filter will barely be noticeable. Filters>Blur>Surface Filter
We need to get rid of the color in this image so that it will match the style of the poster. To do this, we will add a simple color overlay to the image layer. Click on the image layer>the right click on the layer>select Layer Properties>Color Overlay
This is getting closer, but we still need to loose some color. Lets add a photo filter. Image>Adjustments>PhotoFilter
Click on the color block and change the color to #8a5902 and the Density to 87%

Lastly we will apply a Cross Hatch filter. Filters>Brush Strokes>Cross Hatch
Stroke Length: 4
Sharpness: 3
Strength: 1

Step 5

Now we will put the finishing touches on this image so we can start working on the rest of the poster.

We need to get rid of all the background to this picture. Rather than cut it out with the pen tool, I want to erase around it with a soft eraser. By doing this, you will get an ever so slight glow around the subject that will add a nice touch later on in this tutorial.

After you have erased the background, set the layer fill to 80%. You should have something that looks similar to this:

Now we will add the background. I am using this: Text. Paper frame 2 by ~GeneralVyse

Create one layer of this image so that it covers the entire area of our canvas
Create a second layer of the same image with a small portion of the white border showing.
Step 7

Use the Magic Wand Tool to select the white border on our most recent layer. Once you have it selected, delete it
Step 8

Using the layer we just masked, add a color overlay to it.
Click on the image layer>the right click on the layer>select Layer Properties>Color Overlay
Change the color to #863838
Step 9

The Planet Terror poster looks as though it has been folded up. So, we need to do the same. I will be using this stock image by scol22.

Download the image and then do a simple Copy of it.

In the layers pane, Control click on the layer we just turned red to Mask it.

Go to Edit>Paste Into

Re-size and rotate the image to fit inside the mask.

In the Layers pane, change the blend mode to Multiply.
Step 10

Draw a black box near the bottom of the poster. Once you have got it to the right size and shape; in the Layers pane, right click on the black box layer and click Rasterize.

You will notice that some of the back is running over onto our border. Here is how we can fix that; while you have the black box layer selected in the Layers pane, Control click on the layer we made red.

Then right click in side the mask and select Inverse. Now hit delete and the excess black should be trimmed away.
Step 11

Type the title of your movie on top of the black box, but under your folded paper layer.
Next, in the Layers pane, right click on the movie title layer and click Rasterize Type.

With the Move Tool, click on your movie title so that the Transform Box Show up.
Hold Down the Control key and click on the bottom right corner of the Transform box.
By clicking and dragging, you can distort the text so that it has the angled effect that we see on the Planet Terror poster.
Repeat the above steps for the left side of the text as well.
Step 12

Start adding the random text to your movie poster how ever you see fit. I will be using the Planet Terror for reference.
Step 13

To finish off the poster, we need to use some Photoshop Brushes to rough up the poster.

Make sure that you create a new layer for every few brush strokes so that if you dont like some of them, you can delete the layer.

Do not make brush strokes on any of the image layers.

Create a new layer. Next; in the layers pane, Control click on the main red layer we created in step 7. This will mask your new layers so that your brush strokes will only show up on the poster.

There is no easy way to explain how to do this, you just have to play with it. Here is my finished result.

Stamp collecting and philately are very specialized areas and it is not the purpose of this article to conduct a definitive study of postage stamps, in terms of their rarity, financial value and so on. Rather, this is an examination of some of the more unusual and curious postage stamp designs from around the world.

This postcard from 1905 uses stamps to indicate the "love language" (pre-smileys and emoticons, you know). Some options include: "I miss you", "My Heart Is Free", "Do You Think About Me?" Very sweet... especially since you have to use your tongue to glue the stamps in the proper spot, so it is literally tongue-spoken from the heart:

These stamps issued in Malaysia feature a variety of nocturnal animals and actually glow in the dark:

I, certainly, wouldn’t pay for that $900 but I am sure there is a lot of people who actually would do that. It is known as Rainbow Gum or Rainbow Eucalyptus but its real Latin name is Eucalyptus degulpta.I wonder what would it look like if I used this kind of wood to make some furniture. I am sure it would be totally cool to have a computer desk made from that.

Pink Frogfish ocellated

The ocellated frogfish are found in the western Atlantic and as far as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea dwelling in rocky and coral reefs. The largest frogfish in the western Pacific. They are generally small fish, less than 10–20 cm in length, with large globose heads. They can be distinguished from other anglerfish by the three extended dorsal fin spines on their heads. The first dorsal spine is modified as a fishing lure to attract prey. They are mostly bottom-dwelling fish, typically living amongst coral, at up to 100 meters depth, where they lie and wait for prey. They are able to change their color to match the background with high precision, and their camouflage is further aided by numerous warts and filaments on their skin, giving them an appearance similar to rough coral.
Pink Dolphin

The Pink Dolphin is an amazing animal, which lives in the Amazon River, it is usually found in the tributaries and main rivers of the Orinoco River systems in South America. This animal looks almost like the gray dolphin, but there are differences. Their measures can reach up to 2.5 meters long, although males are generally larger. The color of its body is pale pink, and instead of having a dorsal fin like the gray dolphin, it has a hump on its back. The Pink Dolphin’s tale is bigger and it has 2 flippers that look like big leaves, their neck is kind of long and his head has a little hump in the forehead. This animal has tiny eyes and his beak is long and has hairs on top. The Pink Dolphin can turn its head 180 degrees, all the way around since it has an unfused vertebrae. It weighs approximately 90 kilograms. The Pink Dolphin got its amazing pink color from the kind of water it lives in, and the kind of food it eats. The Pink Dolphin is a very nice and friendly animal. The Pink Dolphin does not have many enemies, only enemy it has is humans. Although the Pink Dolphin has 40% more brain capacity than humans do, it still gets killed and hurt by them.
Pink Fairy Armadillo

The Pink Fairy Armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) or Pichiciego is the smallest species of armadillo (mammals of the family Dasypodidae, mostly known for having a bony armor shell). It is approximately 90-115 mm long excluding the tail, and is pale rose or pink in color. It is found in central Argentina where it inhabits dry grasslands and sandy plants with thorn bushes and cacti. It has the ability to bury itself completely in a matter of seconds if frightened.
The Pink Fairy Armadillo burrows small holes near ant colonies in dry dirt. It feeds mainly on ants and ant larvae near its burrow. Occasionally it feeds on worms, snails, insects and larvae, or various plant and root material.
Pink Iguanas

The Pink Land Iguana is a species of lizard of the Iguanidae family. The species was first discovered in 1986 and was identified as a separate species, distinct from the Galapagos land iguana, early in 2009. Pink iguanas, first discovered by Galapagos National Park rangers, are now to be a unique species of land iguana following the analysis of genetic tests on the species. The pink – or “rosada” – iguanas also differ from other land iguanas in striking ways: they have a pink and black-striped coloring, flat head scales, and a thick fatty crest on the back of the neck with small conical scales. Rosada also exhibits slightly different social behaviors than yellow or pallidus land iguanas. The pink iguana population is thought to be incredibly small, existing entirely on the flanks of Volcan Wolf, perhaps small enough to put its survival in danger.
Pink Elephant

A wildlife cameraman took pictures of the calf when he spotted it among a herd of about 80 elephants in the Okavango Delta. Experts believe it is probably an albino, which is an extremely rare phenomenon in African elephants. They are unsure of its chances of long-term survival – the blazing African sunlight may cause blindness and skin problems for the calf. Albino elephants are not usually white, but instead they have more of a reddish-brown or pink hue. While albinism is thought to be fairly common in Asian elephants, it is much less common in the larger African species. Surviving this very rare phenomenon is very difficult in the harsh African bush. Because this elephant calf was sighted in the Okavango Delta, he may have a greater chance of survival. He can seek refuge under the large trees and cake himself in a thick mud, which will protect him from the Sun. Elephants are highly adaptable, intelligent and masters of survival.

Every year in Pennsylvania mountains a few people are fortunate enough to see an amazing thing, a normally green katydid that is brilliant pink, eyes, antennae, legs, everything. This unusual insects is actually a rare variety of one of our common katydids that are normally green all over. The bright pink condition is beautiful and startling to behold, and is caused by a genetically determined condition called erythrism. The pink katydids act just like green ones, and if we are lucky, they will continue to prosper as a special Pennsylvania oddity that most of us will never see alive!

The bright pink dragon millipede is one of more than 1,000 new species discovered or identified between 1997 and 2007 in the Greater Mekong region, which includes parts of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. It is one of nature’s most outrageous examples of aposematism, the display of vivid coloring and other physical signals that the candy-colored, snack-sized morsel in question is packing a poisonous wallop. This millipede is bright pink. It uses its bright colors to warn predators of its often deadly poisons.

Reading the title, and understanding it came directly from me, I suppose adds some weight to the actual Leopard Illusion you see below. It’s hard for me to explain how this illusion came to be, without revealing the actual solution, thus ruining the surprise-effect for you. There is much relevant info and background for it, but for now I’ll retain myself just on revealing the author behind it – the magnificent Craig Tracy. First thing you’ll notice is that it’s not some photo of an actual animal, rather a realistically painted picture. But you’re still far from seeing the illusion. Only tip I can give you, is that leopard’s eyes were painted on a concrete floor. I suggest you examine the picture more closely before seeing this final hint. I’ll monitor the forthcoming ratings, and am eager to see if you agree with me that this must be one of the best optical illusions ever created!
Remember that show called Movie Magic? No wonder this photo looked familiar to me. In one episode, they explained how to morph photos to achieve similar effect. Wilson Wong took this photo, which works in a same way as our previous “Different Perspective” illusion. Whats even more interesting, is that I had a puzzle from Ravensburger with 3000 pieces of an image similar to this. Ravensburger is a company that produces such cool puzzles and even some made from wood (ever saw those classy wood puzzles?) Either way, this is what Wilson wrote to me: “This may interest you for the optical illusion website. It is my own photo….and it dumbfounded quite a lot of people.” I think you will have no problem understanding it, concerning experience you built solving hundreds of optical illusions and magic tricks from this site :) Check for more interesting photos in our Flickr category.

Is it an Angry Biker? Or is it a Sad Rabbi? It all depends on how do you flip the picture, or which face you look at. In the first picture it’s a biker with unshaved beard and bad-ass expression, if you flip this image, you see a rabbi with rabbi-hat, that is composed of biker’s beard, and here biker’s curly hair becomes Rabbi’s curly beard. Twisted, ayeh? Looks really simple to make in MS Paint, but what is needed is and idea if you want to make one of your own! There are hundreds of similar illusions on this site. Original was Young Lady or an old hag, I think. Followed by “Before and After 6 Beers“. Many more can be found inside multiple meanings category.
This one has to be the best illusion I came across. It’s a scanned flayer for the local dancing school (probably this one). Took some time to see it tough, but when I noticed the illusion I couldn’t stop laughing. I’ll let you figure this one yourselves. No hints from me!

Peter Qviller, probably inspired by Camel Cigarettes article, spotted the hidden bear in Toblerone chocolate logo. Here’s what Peter said: “If you look closely on the Matterhorn mountain on the Toblerone chocolate, you will see the swiss symbol of Bern (a Bear) incorporated into the mountain“. I think the bear was supposed to be seen by people, but not many notice it. Can you see it? I’m not biggest fan of this chocolate, but this photo sure gave me inspiration to find some chocolate in my kitchen. Hope I have some, let me check… No luck :( There are few more logos that include symbolism. Remember we talked about Fedex logo, and the arrow hidden in it? Hy everyone. For today I have prepared simple, yet amazing optical illusion (like I always do :) The Poggendorff Illusion is an optical illusion that involves brain’s perception of the interaction between diagonal lines and horizontal and vertical edges. It is named after Poggendorff, who discovered it in the drawing of Johann Karl Friedrich Zöllner, in which Zöllner showed the Zöllner illusion in 1860. In the picture to the left, a straight A and B line is obscured by a “track”. The A line appears, instead of the B line, to be the same as the C one, which is shown not to be the case. If you would like to check this for your selves, be sure to jump inside this article, and see the explanation example. I can’t beleive I missed posting this one, since it is so perfect optical illusion reperesentative.

It’s hard to imagine these two tables have exactly the same shape of their tops. You don’t believe me? Simply print this image, cut the first top with your scisors, and then place it above other table’s top and you’ll see they align perfectly. This magic trick can also be proven with Photoshop.
If you look a the vintage photo below, at first it seems to be a simple couple with a large head floating between them. But things aren’t always what they seem. Most people will probably just see a large bearded head between the two figurines. It looks like some sort of Jesus head. But look again, carefully this time. What the photo actually shows, is a CHILD SITTING on the man’s knee. If you still don’t see it, block out the “hair” of the illusive head – it is just a collection of the background foliage anyway. The “eye” is actually child’s face (shadowed by a large white bonnet). The “nose” is the sleeve, and the “mustache” is the child’s arm. If you still don’t see it, be patient – It may take awhile to see it.
Still no luck obtaining necessary iPone apps. I figured out if I wanted to post to this blog off an iPhone, I’d need some crucial utilities. First I’d like to know if there is a simple iPhone app that allows me to resize photos to a width I prefer. Secondly, I’d need a good copy-paste option enabled. Above all that, I’d need an app that would let me enter text inside Blogger’s “Create Post” form. I can’t believe Google hasn’t introduced blogger app out yet. Well, if someone knows answer to any of my questions, please share. In the mean time here’s a simple optical illusion that involves ropes. Apparently, something isn’t as you think it should be in the first photo. If you can’t find out what’s wrong, be sure to check second pic which can be found inside this article.

World's oldest lightbulb still burning bright after 109 years

The world's oldest light bulb has been burning for 109 years - so little wonder it has a fan club with thousands of members and its own website.

As EU rules deny householders the right to use traditional filament bulbs, the so-called 'Centennial Light' has been on almost constantly since 1901.

It holds pride of place in Fire Station 6, in Livermore, northern California.

The longest time the Guinness World Record-holding bulb has ever been turned off for is just a week.

Dangling above the fire engines, people come for hundreds and thousands of miles to see the diminutive symbol.

The bulb was designed by Adolphe Chailet, who competed with the likes of the world famous Thomas Edison to make the best bulb.

Despite his amazing design Chailet was never as successful as Edison even though his bulb was proved to survive higher voltages.

Bulb protector Steve Bunn said the secret of the lights success was down to good old fashioned engineering.

He said: 'They certainly don't make them like this anymore, it's a real sign of how some things were better made in the past.

'The man who invented the bulb was Adolphe Chailet and he sounded by all accounts to be a very serious person.

'But when it comes to spark, he did perform an experiment where several competitors, including Edison.

'All the bulbs were subjected to a test of increasing voltage, and exploded, all except for Chailet's which just got brighter.

'That would have been fun to watch.

'The appeal of the light is worldwide, a few weeks ago I received a message from someone living in the Arctic Circle.
'They said the little bulb was a beacon of light for the whole world, even in dark and lonely places which was a humbling thought to me.

'As well as the fact this little bulb was burning when my grandparents were children, it's amazing.

'My theory, that the bulb has lasted, is because Adolphe Chailet just made a better bulb, and filament.

'To the folks on the committee, the fire department and the city of Livermore California, the bulb is priceless, but we did have an offer for $5,000 once.

'On face value, it is high up in the rafters, and a little dim, but when visitors talk to the firemen who live with it, and hear the history from them, it comes alive as a symbol of good things gone by.

'I just invited a friend of my dad, Cal, to go see it last week and he just turned 100 last year.

'His response on seeing it he said: 'Oh I saw enough of those growing up, I can picture it in my mind'.' The lightbulb in Livermore is a Shelby model and was first designed by the Shelby Electric Company in the late 1890s.
Centennial Light facts and figures

Age: 109 years and counting (as of 2010)

Installed: First installed at the fire department hose cart house on L Street in 1901. Shortly after it moved to the main firehouse on Second. In 1903 it was moved to the new Station 1 on First and McLeod, and survived the renovation of the Firehouse in 1937, when it was off for about a week.
During it's first 75 years it was connected directly to the 110 Volt city power, (subject to the power outages) , and not to the back-up generator for fear of a power surge. In 1976 it was moved with a full police and fire truck escort, under the watch of Captain Kirby Slate, to its present site in 1976 at Fire Station 6, Livermore, California. It was then hooked to a seperate power source at 120V according to Frank Maul, Retired City Electrician, with no interuptions since.

Proof of Longevity: From local newspaper records; also GE engineers researched it. Was donated to the Fire Department in 1901 by Dennis Bernal who owned the Livermore Power and Light Co.

Vital Statistics: The improved incandescent lamp, invented by Adolphe A. Chaillet, was made by the Shelby Electric Company. It is a handblown bulb with carbon filament. Approximate wattage-4 watts. Left burning continuously in firehouse as a nightlight over the fire trucks. For some research test results on a sister bulb at Annapolis follow this link.

Recognition: Declared the oldest known working lightbulb by Guinness Book of World Records. Ripley's Believe-It-or-Not in 1972 researched it and declared it the oldest. Charles Kurault of the TV program 'On the Road with Charles Kurault' visited the bulb in the 1970s and included it in his book as well. Declarations from the President of the U.S., Congress, Senate, State Senate and Assembly, and Shelby Ohio.In 2007 it was again recognized in Guiness, and Ripleys books.

Closest Competitors: The Second longest bulb was listed in the 1970 Guinness Book under the heading Most Durable says that 'on 21 Sept 1908 a stagehand named Barry Burke at the Byers Opera House, Fort Worth, Texas screwed in a new light bulb and that it was still burning'. The building was renamed the Palace Theatre, and the light was known as the Palace Bulb ever since. It now resides in the Stockyards Museum, and will have been burning for 100 years Sept of 2008. A website is in the works.
The Third, a bulb in a New York City hardware store had been working since 1912, but it is unknown if it still works today.
The Fourth is known as 'the bulb' which like ours, burns in a firehouse in the town of Mangum, Oklahoma. It has been in operation since around 1926, has no special power conversions, and is on continuously.
The Fifth was a bulb in a washroom at the Martin & Newby Electrical Shop in Ipswich, England was dated from 1930 and burned out in January 2001.

Future Plans: The City of Livermore and the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department intend to keep the bulb burning as long as it will. They have no plans at present what to do with the bulb if or when it does burn out. Ripley's has requested it for their museum.
Visiting: You can visit the bulb depending on the availability of the Firemen on hand. Go to the rear of the station and ring the bell. If they are in someone will answer the door. Otherwise you can see the bulb if you look through the window up on the top of the wall to your left.

Celebration: We commemorated its centennial on Friday, June 8, 2001 at the fire station. The celebration was from 5 to 8 p.m. with a community BBQ and program. Three bands provided a variety of music, ranging from 1900 era, 1950s music, and a contemporary rock music group. Please see the celebration gallery for all the pictures.

1879: Thomas A. Edison, along with others developed the first practical filament lightbulb design, it lasted just 13.5 hours. However in months Edison had developed one which lasted 1,200 hours.

1930: Photo flashlight bulbs were first used in photography.

1959: A design for halogen lightbulb is first patented by the US company General Electric.

1962: The LED, or light-emitting diode is first introduced as a practical component in computers and electronics.

2009: The UK Government announced it was phasing out the traditional filament lightbulb banning sales in favour of environmentally-friendly halogen models.

A micro-chihuahua with a big personality is turning heads as one of the world's smallest dogs - measuring up at just four inches long.

When tiny pup Lulu was born along with her sister and two brothers three months ago, her owner Jean Tindall, 76, didn't think there was anything remarkable about her.

But as the weeks passed pensioner Jean, who has bred chihuahuas for five years, noticed Lulu was not growing like her siblings - in fact, she was not growing at all.
Grandmother-of-two Jean, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, said: 'I didn't think anything of it when her mum gave birth to the litter, she looked the same size as all the others.

'But puppies grow quickly and I soon realised that her brothers and sisters were all overtaking her.

'I don't want to sell her because she will need so much extra care and attention being so small.

'She is so tiny, she's only four inches. She can fit in my hand she's so tiny. You can't believe she's out of the same litter because the rest are twice as big as her.'
Jean, who named Lulu after the pint sized Scottish songstress, said the petite pooch - part of the smallest breed of dog in the world - makes up for her lack of size with a giant personality.

The mum-of-two, added: 'She sleeps all day long on a hot water bottle I give her to keep her warm then when I'm ready for bed she wakes up and runs rings around me. I can barely keep up.

'Even though she's small she's got so much love to give and is a little bundle of joy.

'She hasn't developed a bark yet but when she does I'm sure it'll be as loud as a normal-sized dog.'

The moment a £140,000 Lamborghini parked UNDER another car

Finding a parking space can be a frustrating business sometimes.

But trying to slot a £140,000 supercar underneath another vehicle is not a tactic worth attempting – as these astonishing pictures show.

Somehow, while driving around Hollywood Hills, California, the skinny-nosed Lamborghini Gallardo slid right under the giant Saab 4x4, lifting it into the air.

And amazingly, the sports car seemed to hold up pretty well.

Despite damaging the front, the Lamborghni’s roof didn’t buckle under the two-ton Saab 9-7X.
